Pac-Man, stylized in all uppercase as PAC-MAN, is an iconic arcade game developed by Toru Iwatani of Namco. It was initially released in Japan under the name PUCKMAN in May 1980. The game was licensed for distribution in the United States by Midway Games and launched there in October 1980. At the time of its release, the arcade scene was dominated by stark space shooters like Galaxian and Asteroids. PAC-MAN broke new ground by pioneering the maze chase genre, eventually becoming a timeless classic in video game history and a symbol of 1980s popular culture. Interestingly, there was a notable gender divide among gamers: a 1982 estimate suggested that 60% of PAC-MAN players were women, whereas 90% of players of the space shoot-'em-up Omega Race were men.
