The Smurfs (French: Les Schtroumpfs; Dutch: De Smurfen) is a popular Belgian comic franchise centered around a fictional community of small, blue, human-like creatures who reside in mushroom-shaped houses within a forest. The franchise was first created by Belgian artist Peyo (the pen name of Pierre Culliford) in 1958, originally depicted as comic characters known as Les Schtroumpfs. Over time, more than 100 Smurf characters have been introduced, with names typically derived from adjectives that highlight their distinctive traits—for example, "Jokey Smurf," who enjoys playing practical jokes on his friends. "Smurfette" holds the distinction of being the first female Smurf in the series. The Smurfs are recognizable by their Phrygian caps, which have come to symbolize freedom in modern cultural contexts.
